About Dr Peter Cowley

Compassionate, considerate, competent.

Dr Peter Cowley is a Consultant Psychiatrist, registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand and a therapist. Located in Paremata, he is well known to general practitioners in the greater Wellington region, including Porirua, Mana and Kapiti. Peter has extensive experience working in mental health, including bicultural services and alcohol and drug addictions. He has a particular interest in managing depression in the community.

Peter has been the CEO of a government agency and has worked as a management consultant in a variety of settings. He has self-published a book on spirituality and transformation. Peter has a unique breadth of experience, including supervision and mentoring.

Working with Dr Peter Cowley

Peter offers a single point of entry to review your mental health and interventions appropriate to you. He works with a wide range of people across different ages, genders and ethnicities. You can refer yourself.

For the majority of people, you only need to see Peter, who will support you through controlling the symptoms, identifying the triggers and doing something about them, working out where it all came from, building confidence and self-esteem, rebuilding relationships, and planning the pathway towards recovery.

If Peter considers that another particular intervention is needed that he cannot provide, he will make those arrangements and provide the necessary information so that you do not have to tell your story to lots of different people.

What you can expect on your first visit

When you see Dr Peter Cowley for the first time he will undertake a full comprehensive mental health assessment and discuss a treatment approach with you. You are welcome to have a copy of this. In addition, Dr Peter Cowley makes an audio recording of his sessions which he uses for his own quality improvement purposes. If you would like a copy of the recording please ask him.
